Go With The Flow, Katie. Gosh.

After a fabulous and much-needed winter break, I am so happy to be back at school!

The other day I was reading from the Bhagavad Gita (actually just the foreword) and it was just teaching about some of the basic philosophies in Hinduism and their ideas of a healthy life and spirituality, etc. It's fascinating, I'm already in love, and I haven't even started reading the actual book yet.

Some of my Mormon friends might be wondering why I would be reading the Bhagavad Gita. Religions are just fascinating to me. I find that every religion has a lot more in common than they would like to admit. There are just so many overlaps between various schools of belief that just further prove to me that there IS a God.

But I digress.

The best thing I have learned about Hinduism so far is the concept of accomplishing tasks. They believe that only the ignorant would work with a selfish motive in mind, while the wise act without expectation of any material gain. And not just material gain. In general, they believe that one is healthiest when performing tasks with disregard for desired results, because working with a particular expectation in mind will only cause your mind to become agitated.

Basically... reading this served me up a little piece of humble pie. Actually, it was more like a complete humble pie with a 16" diameter that I had to eat in its bittersweet entirety. And I couldn't help but smile because I just loved that new, fresh perspective. I spent the whole way walking home from school acting like some big-shot philosopher having just discovered that life isn't about doing things for certain things, but because maybe you just enjoy those things.

Basically it's a complicated way of saying that life is unexpected and nothing is guaranteed. I still don't have the whole concept down which shows how much I have to learn from this. I guess this is just something I will have to work on in 2013: going with the flow.

Gosh I am so uptight. I don't know how I'm gonna do this.
